PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly execute the retracting/resetting so that a molten metal surface detector does not interfere with a tundish body and a sliding nozzle, to precisely enable the setting to the original position in the case of resetting and to always execute the detection of the molten metal surface level. SOLUTION: This device is composed of a swing base 3 arranged near a mold and swing-ably around the vertical shaft 4, an arm 6 supported with a bearing 5 fitted to the swing base 3 and rotatably around the horizontal shaft and the molten metal surface level detector 1 fitted to the tip part of the arm 6. At the time of rotating the arm 6, the molten metal surface detector 1 turns downward and the detecting surface is faced to the molten metal surface, and at the time of rotating the arm 6 to the retracting posture, the molten metal surface detector 1 turns sideward and positions at higher position than the upper surface of the mold. At the time of swinging the arm 6 to the using position, the molten metal surface detector 1 positions at the upper part of a space in the mold, and at the time of swinging the arm 6 to the retracting position, the molten metal surface detector 1 positions at a position apart from the mold.
