摘要 |
PURPOSE: An integrated optics optic intensity modulator and manufacturing method thereof vary the refractive index of a waveguide in the zigzag form and make asymmetric a waveguide mode, thereby reducing insertion loss and driving voltage. CONSTITUTION: A waveguide(204) is formed in the center of an alternate domain-inversion region(202) formed on a LiNbO3 or LiTaO3 substrate(200) with spontaneous polarization. The plural domain-inversion regions(202) and the plural spontaneous polarization regions are formed alternating with each other. A domain-inversion electrode(206) and a ground connection electrode(208) for applying electric field are formed on the waveguide(204). A buffer layer(210) of silicon dioxide is formed on the waveguide(204). The refractive index difference between left and right sides increases twice by using the domain-inversion structure so that the waveguide mode is polarized rightward or leftward. The light signal is unevenly dispersed by the increase and decrease of the refractive index in the domain-inversion region and the refractive index in the spontaneous polarization region when voltage is applied to the electrodes(206,208).
