In a mechanical, automated transfer of workpieces by a giver apparatus to a receiver apparatus, or in the removal of the workpieces from the receiver apparatus damage often occurs as a result of faulty positioning or dimensioning at least of one of the participating devices. This becomes particularly problematic in the case of highly sensitive and costly apparatuses, such as measuring machines. In order to avoid such damage to the participating devices, according to the invention a compensation apparatus, for example for a measuring apparatus (10), is proposed in which those end plates (14) serving for the depositing of the workpiece are elastically articulated in carrier elements (12). The carrier elements (12) contain, for this purpose, in each case a resilient element (32) with which a compensation movement in a horizontal plane is made possible, and in each case an adjustable helical spring (48) which permits a compensation movement in the vertical direction. <IMAGE>
