The press has a housing (9) containing a piston-cylinder device (8), with a press head attached to the working piston (7) and an external or internal hydraulic pressure device (13). The position of the press head is detected by a displacement sensor (27), controlling a release device (28) for activating a pressure delivery device (20), such as an electrical displacement sensor with electrical operation of the pressure delivery device. An Independent claim for a displacement-dependent press control is also included.
