A phased array antenna system operates by converting the signals associated with each radiating element into digital samples. The digital phase shift samples (12) are processed separately so that the signals forming the beam are all of the same phase. Preferably, the digital samples corresponding to each of the beams are read and those corresponding to each of the elements along a given line of the array are shifted by a predetermined number of positions. The sum of the samples associated with the elements corresponding to each line is then formed. Each of the sums formed is then multiplied by a corresponding and predetermined phase coefficient to form a distinct beam within which all signals have the same phase. An Independent claim is included for a phased array antenna control device using the method of the invention.
