PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound with easy operation and inexpensive apparatus, at a low cost, by partially oxidizing an alcohol with a solid bromous acid salt in the presence of a catalyst comprising aluminum oxide, etc., giving no environmental pollution problem, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by (1) using an alcohol of formula (R and R' are H, paraffinic hydrocarbon group or cycloparaffin group) as a starting material, (2) reacting the alcohol with a solid bromous acid salt at a molar ratio (salt-alcohol) of >=1.0, especially 1.5 in a water- insoluble organic solvent in the presence of aluminum oxide or silica gel as a catalyst, (3) separating the solid component from the organic solvent and (4) distilling out the organic solvent. The alcohol of formula is preferably a 8-12C secondary alcohol having paraffinic hydrocarbon group or phenyl group. The solvent is preferably methylene chloride. |
