In a machine tool such as a lathe there is provided tool carrying means which comprises a pair of endless chains 40 which releasably support each of a plurality of tools or tool-holders 18, the chains being mounted on sprockets 42, 44 and 46 and 48 which are driven through gears from a motor 52 whereby each tool or tool holder is moved consecutively to and clamped in a tool station 14. Plungers 56 on the chains engage the tool holders to effect support and movement thereof and an adjustable stop 62 facilitates the precise position of the tool or holder in the tool station. The apparatus is supported on rail members 20, 20 in hydrostatic bearings which permit accurate alignment of the apparatus during the feed movements of the tool. The tools or tool holders may be preset at a location away from the machine tool and the face 72, dovetail 64 and stop 62 on the work station correspond to those reference planes to which the tools have been preset whereby the tools when clamped in the station 14 are in the precise position required in use. Pneumatic means are provided for clamping the tool or holder in the station 14, for maintaining a predetermined tension in the chains and for actuating the stop 62 and wedge clamp 66. Means is also provided to supply coolant or cutting fluid and/or air to the cutting tool when in use. (For Figures see next page.) |
