In forming a magnetic recording material by plating a web with a ferromagnetic metal layer the web is conveyed through a magnetic field in a helical path along a pipe immersed in a plating soln. Plating soln. fed into one end of the pipe is ejected from inside the pipe through orifices in the pipe with sufficient force to lift the web out of contact with the pipe during its helical passage. Used for making magnetic tape by electroless or electro coating. Scratches and surface defects on the tape are eliminated since the tape is not in contact with the conveying pipe. The axis of easy magnetisation may be in any required direction by selecting the web angle in relation to the pipe e.g. 10-75 degrees.
