Whenever surface treatment means provided with bristles, such as a brush, are used, this is usually associated with wear and/or deformation of the bristles. This leads to the fact that the bristles no longer act at the intended angle, for example 90 DEG , on the surface to be treated, but become deformed towards one side counter to the preferred direction of movement. As a result, the brush power against materials on the surface is reduced and the operating performance is diminished or made impossible because the bristles simply slide over dirt, for example, but are no longer able to grip it and remove it. The object of the invention is to provide a device which avoids the disadvantages described above and extends the effective service life of a brush or of a bristle body. According to the invention, a holding device or an adaptor is provided, consisting of a carrying body (2, 20) and a receiving part (9, 25), the receiving part (9, 25) being attached to the carrying body (2, 20) so as to be rotatable or pivotable about a joint (10, 26), and fixing means (13, 14, 27) being provided to retain the receiving part on the carrying body. <IMAGE>
