A device and a method for exchanging at least a part of the liquid in liquid containers such as for example aquaria is described. The liquid container is connected, via a supply line, in particular a pipe or a hose, to a fresh-water container, both the quantity and the time of fresh-water supply from the fresh-water container into the liquid container being automatically controllable by an in particular programmable electronic control device. Present below the container upper edge is an overflow for carrying off the liquid above a given liquid level, the liquid carried off via the overflow being collectable in a waste-water container.
