When the occurrence of a short-circuit fault of any of switch portions (13) including switch elements (11) and feedback diodes (12) connected to the switch elements (11) in parallel of an inverter circuit (7) is detected during the operation of a motor (1), a switch portion (13) in which the short-circuit fault has occurred judges that the occurrence thereof is on the positive electrode side or on the negative electrode side. The switch elements (11) are so controlled that all the switch portions (13) on the same electrode side as the switch portion (13) in which the short-circuit has occurred are brought into a conduction state and all the switch elements (11) on the different electrode side are brought into a blocked state. This prevents a high current from flowing into each switch portion of an inverter circuit without requiring any switch to block the energization between a motor and the inverter circuit when a short-circuit fault of the switch portion of the inverter circuit occurs.
