Described is a device for de-scaling semi-finished products (4), such as thin steel slabs and steel strip, in rolling mills, the device using water at high pressure which is sprayed through a nozzle array (10) onto the surface of the semi-finished product, the nozzle array (10) being mounted so that it can be driven to move, with one component of its motion (21) in the vertical plane, over the surface of the semi-finished product by means of a drive (22). The drive is acted on by a control unit (44) which takes as its input parameters the theoretical distance (a) between the nozzle array (10) and the surface of the semi-finished product (4), and the actual distance as measured by a displacement transducer (40). The control unit (44) delivers an output signal via a signal line (48, 49) to the drive (22, 38) to reduce the difference to zero. The nozzle array (10) is therefore held at the required theoretical distance (a) from the surface of the semi-finished product (4) even if bumps (8) occur in the surface.
