The use of the nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitors (I) is claimed for reducing the swelling of nasal mucous membranes and for inhibiting the nasal secretions in inflammatory and allergic conditions. (I) is an L-arginine analogue such as L-arginine with a nitro, amino, or (mono)methyl N-substit., N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester or N-iminoethyl-l-ornithine.
