The arrangement includes an electrode-less discharge chamber, which is filled with a mixture (3) of mercury vapour and rare gas. The discharge chamber consists of an entirely sealed, cylindrical vitreous silica vessel (1), in whose interior at least one coiled vitreous silica capillary (2) is located. The input and output ends (4a,4b) of the coiled capillary pass hermetically sealed through the wall of the cylindrical vessel. Arrangements are mounted outside the cylindrical vessel for inductive or capacitive supply of high-frequency energy.
