Optical brighteners for polymers comprise v-triazolyl coumarins of the general formula where V and W each represent an alkyl, phenyl or phenylalkyl group which may be substituted by non-reactive non-chromogenic substituents, Y represents phenyl which may be similarly substituted, R 1 and R 4 are hydrogen or methyl and R 2 and R 3 are hydrogen, methyl or methoxy. Specified polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyesters such as polyterephthalic acid glycol esters and polyamides such as nylon 6 and 66. About 0À001 to 0À5% of brightener is used. It is incorporated into the melt before spinning and may be combined with plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, stabilizers, e.g. dibutyl tin dilaurate or sodium penta-octyl tripolyphosphate, or pigments, e.g. TiO 2 . It may also be added to the monomers before polymerization.
