A chuck for gripping a tool holder 9 comprises at least two sets of balls 11 and 12 held in engagement with recesses or grooves in the holder 9 by a spring-biased outer sleeve 3, the set of balls 12 engaging rigidly in recesses to lock the holder against relative rotation whilst the set of balls 11 act on the slope of a groove 14, or equivalent recesses, to resiliently urge the holder 9 into the chuck. For additional locking the holder may be provided with screw-threads to screw into the end of the outer sleeve 3 (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). A locking device may be provided to lock the sleeve 3 in its locked position and comprises a nut and ball-race co-operating with a groove in the chuck body (Figs. 7-9, not shown). |
