The breech (23) consists of a breech head (2) and a control piece (3). In the firing position, the breech head (2) is locked to the breech housing (1) via pivotable bolts, which can be displaced by means of control surfaces of the control piece (3). After firing, the bolts are pivoted into a release position and the breech head (2) as well as the control piece (3) carry out their recoil and forward movement. In order that the control piece (3), which is loaded by a firing spring force, does not exert a pressure on the bolts throughout the entire movement, via the control surfaces, as a result of which the said bolts would be pressed outwards against the side walls of the breech housing (1) and would cause friction losses, there is a locking device (24, 26, 29, 30) which eliminates this risk. Arranged in the breech head (2) is a locking bolt (24) which can be pushed into a recess in the control piece (3) during the recoil, as a result of which the breech head (2) is coupled to the control piece (3) in such a manner that no force is transmitted between the bolts and the control surfaces. <IMAGE>
