PURPOSE:To automatically examine the error of print colors by specifying the printing position of a toner mark at every color and comparing and collating colors designated by a host device with colors printed by a printer in accordance with the positional relations of actually added toner marks. CONSTITUTION:A marker 13 adds toner marks to coordinates on a line in positions specified at every color of the toners in the carrying direction of a form 10 by toners used for printing. In case of printing in black and red, the marker 13 adds a black toner mark 11B and a red toner mark 11R on the form 10; and in case of printing in black and green, the marker 13 adds the black toner mark 11B and a green toner mark 11G. At the time of detecting black and red toner marks 11B and 11R, a read sensor 14 outputs a waveform (a) and in case of detecting black and green toner marks 11B and 11G, the read sensor 14 outputs a waveform (b). A comparator 15 stores preliminarily a reference signal having a waveform (c) and compares and collates this reference signal with the output waveform of the read sensor 14 to recognize the toner color.
