<p>PURPOSE:To exactly and automatically align the center of an electrode to a melting crucible by measuring the current values of branch conductors disposed at every specified interval to the peripheral part of the melting crucible and turning the electrode in such a manner that the respective current values attain the same value. CONSTITUTION:While the front end of the electrode 10 is held immersed in molten slag 17 in the water-cooled crucible 3, the current is passed in a water-cooled cable 16B, the electrode 10, the molten slag 17, a molten pool 18, an ingot 19, a water cooled surface plate 2, the respective branch conductors 4a-4d, and a water-cooled cable 16. Joule heat is generated in the slag 17 in this way, by which the electrode 10 is melted and the melt is dropped in the slag 17 to form an ingot 19. The current values of the respective branch conductors 4a-4d are picked up at all times by current detecting coils 15a-15d at this time. The front end of the electrode 10 is turned by actuating a piston rod properly with cylinder mechanism 13, 14 in such a manner that the respective current values coincide with each other if the detected current values do are not coincident with each other. The center of the electrode 10 is exactly and automatically aligned to the crucible 3 in this way.</p> |
