PURPOSE:To prevent peeling or dropout of a magnetic layer or deposition of foreign matter and to improve durability and reliability by using specified fatty acid esters as a lubricant to be incorporated into the magnetic layer on a nonmagnetic substrate. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic recording medium consists of a nonmagnetic substrate and a magnetic layer formed thereon essentially comprising ferromagnetic metal powder and containing at least a nonmagnetic binder and a lubricant. As for the lubricant, such fatty acid esters are used that has <=80 cp (centipoise) viscosity at 0 deg.C, which is the lowest temp. of the operational range of the medium, and >=20 cp at 20 deg.C and >=10 cp at 40 deg.C. By this method, not only at room temp. but at low temp., deposition of foreign matter on the medium can be prevented and the lubricant has high film strength with enough lubrication effect on the magnetic layer surface. Thus, durability of the medium can be greatly improved. |
