PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an output device to convert a color shown by an input color image signal into an apparently desirable color. SOLUTION: A 1st color conversion section 3 matches a lightness range of a color reproduction possible area of an input side with a lightness range of a color reproduction possible area of an output side, adjusts the lightness with a maximum saturation with a prescribed function and sets a medium color reproduction possible area and converts the input color image signal into the medium color image signal within the medium color reproduction possible area. Furthermore, a 2nd color conversion section 4 takes an achromatic color with a lightness at a point in the output side color reproduction possible area at which a maximum saturation is realized as a target point and keeps the lightness when the lightness of the medium color image signal is higher than the lightness of the target point to apply conversion processing to the saturation. Furthermore, when the lightness of the medium color image signal is lower than the lightness of the target point, the conversion section 4 applies conversion processing to the lightness and the saturation in a direction of a line segment tying the color of the medium color image signal and the target point.
