PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat insulative sealant which shows high holding strength for a catalyst carrier, keeps sufficient buffering function against vibration, and hardly causes dust pollusion due to no powdering, and provide an exhaust emission controlling converter for a vehicle which employs the heat insulative sealant. SOLUTION: An exhaust gas cleanup converter for an automobile is prepared by a compact which is composed of alumina short fibers. The short fibers are made of Al-Si spinel compound containing 70 to 87 wt.% of alumina, 13 to 30 wt.% of silica in its chemical composition, and 0 to 15 wt.% of mulite in its mineral component. The converter is arranged between a heat insulative sealant for an exhaust gas cleanup converter whose bulk density is 0.1 to 0.6 g/cm, and a cylindrical shell whose catalyst carrier and outside thereof are surrounded by the heat insulative sealant. |
