1,204,057. Cooling extrudates. GENERAL ENG. CO. (RADCLIFFE) Ltd. 10 July, 1969 [16 July, 1968], No. 33806/68. Heading B5A. Extrudate e is cooled by passage through liquid coolant in a bath 10, the extrudate entering and exiting via apertures 11, 12, respectively, sealed against egress of coolant under the action of hydrostatic forces by inwardly-directed convergent curtains of the coolant delivered from annular orifices 15. Preferred values for the angle included by the curtains lie between 30 and 90 degrees. Excess coolant from bath 10 may be cooled and re-cycled. In modifications, aperture 12 may be dispensed with and the extrudate when sufficiently resilient led out of the bath through the upper liquid surface, or orifice 15 at aperture 11 may be dispensed with, the extrudate entering the aperture directly from the extruder. It is stated that the bath may be adapted for vertical operation. |
