A number of pieces of porous material e.g. in tablet form, are impregnated with metallic thorium and mounted within a porous container, esp. of cylindrical shape, so that they are not in direct physical contact with its walls. The container is brought up to operating temp. for emission by a direct heating current passed through it for a specific short period. The thorium rich subassembly is kept out of direct contact by winding with a tungsten wire and either tungsten or graphite can be used for the porous piece parts.
