Hypotensive, sedative extract of pseudocni - chona africana

The extract is obtained by drying the bark from the trunk, grinding it to a powder of particle size between 0.1-0.5 mm, and extracting it with 10 times its wt. of an aqueous soln. at 95 degrees C for 1/2 to 1 hr. The aqueous extractant is preferably an isotonic soln. of sodium chloride, a 1.2% ammonium carbonate soln., a 1% urea soln. or a 0.5% acetic acid soln. The mixture is cooled, rapidly filtered and concentrated. The concentrate is kept for 48 hrs. at 4 degrees C, filtered and dried to give a brown-hygroscopic powder in a yield of 100g per Kg of dried bark.
