Thethruster system laterally discharges packed boxes being transported by a conveyor, and uses a thruster in a vertical position during the operation. After the operation the thruster (48) folds into the horizontal position, and in this position is returned above the conveyor (1) to the starting position. Here it is unfolded again into the vertical position before the next operation. The thruster can hinge on a transverse horizontal axis (49) on a slide (33) working to and fro above the items handled (3), and with which a driving member (51) engages at a point clear of the pivot point. A stop on the slide limits the amount for which the thruster can swing downwards under the action of the driving member, so that further movement of the latter thrusts the entire slide forward.
