The 'cold' electrode includes two conductive plates (2,2a) along with a pressure activated microswitch (4). The two conductive plates are attached to an insulating support (3). The microswitch is relatively thin and flat, and is protected by a plastics envelope. The electrode is used to make a permanent contact with a patient's skin during electrosurgery, while the surgeon operates with a second electrode. The patient lies with an area of soft skin in contact with the electrode. To avoid burns arising from excessive current density if the electrode does not make good contact, the microswitch is sensitive to the pressure arising from the weight of the patient.
|
