PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress occurrence of black stripes due to dirt existing on an original before it is read and also to reduce the effect of block stripes due to dirt caused during reading of the original. SOLUTION: Dirt deposited on an electric document handler EDH glass plate is detected in a step S501 in the image reader, and an area having widest width on the EDH glass, where no dirt is in existence, is decided as a slider moving area in a step S503 on the basis of the result of detection. Then whether or not the length of the slider moving area is larger than a threshold is discriminated in a step S505. When the length is smaller than the threshold, a warning is displayed in a step S521, whereas when the length is longer than the threshold, after a prescribed setting valve is decided in a step S507, the image of an original is read, while moving the slider to carry the slider in steps S509-S515.
