PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new sol-gel processing method for producing a silica- based article. SOLUTION: The sol-gel process is utilized for producing a bulk germanium- doped core rod useful for a variety of applications including a core rod, a substrate tube, immediate overcladding, an exhaust-type fiber laser or a planar waveguide. The sol-gel process comprises (a) a step of supplying a dispersion in which silica particles are dispersed in a solution of a quaternary ammonium germanate (e.g. tetramethylammonium germanate), (b) a step of gelling the dispersion to form a gel body and (c) a step of drying, heat treating and firing the gel body so as to form germanium-doped silica glass. |
