摘要 PURPOSE:To suppress the strain on a glass surface to an extent where there is no possibility of breaking by specifying the external diameter of an optical fiber below a' specific size and setting a torsion rate to >=200 revolutions per minute. CONSTITUTION:The circular birefringent single-mode optical fiber 1 consists of a core 2 and a clad 3 and is twisted at the specific torsion rate as shown by an arrow, and then a coating layer 4 is formed of, for example, thermosetting urethane acrylate. The external diameter of the circular birefringent single-mode optical fiber is reduced to <=50mum and the torsion rate is also set to >=200 revolutions per meter to obtain polarization maintaining characteristics on the condition of the torsion rate. Thus, the condition of the external diameter mentioned above is set to suppress the strain of the glass surface almost until there is no possibility of breaking, thereby improving the durability.
