METHOD AND DEVICE FOR MEASURING MPEG NOISE STRENGTH OF COMPRESSED DIGITAL IMAGE

A method and an apparatus for measuring the strength of an MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group) noise of a compressed digital image are provided to estimate the strength of block artifacts in respective block boundaries on the basis of global and local edge statistics calculated from an input image in a space domain. A compression artifact estimator(104) determines the strength of blocking artifacts in respective block boundaries, and measures the strength of a block-based encoding noise in a decoded digital image frame. An image enhancer(102) reduces the block-based encoding noise in the image frame by using a function of the strength of the blocking artifacts to generate an improved image.
