PURPOSE:To apply the titled method to an optical switch element which requires a high contrast as well, by superposing and applying a specific voltage signal, during the period of maintaining one of two light transmission states. CONSTITUTION:At the time of making a light beam transmit, and at the time of cutting off the light beam, +VO and -VO are applied to a signal voltage, respectively. Also, to electrodes of common electrodes C1, C2, voltages of VC1 and VC2 are applied, respectively. As for a waveform of VC1, in a picture element B write period TB, an AC voltage waveform for maintaining a state of a picture element A which is written in a period of TA is used, and as for a waveform of VC2, on the contrary, in a picture element A write period TA, an AC voltage waveform for maintaining a state of a picture element B which is written in a period of TB is used. When a notice is taken to the picture element A, in a non-selective period, an alternating voltage to which a DC voltage VO which goes to the second voltage signal whose polarity is opposite to that of the first voltage signal applied to the selective period TA and an AC voltage which goes to the third voltage signal have been superposed is obtained. Since information can be written without exerting an influence on a picture element to maintain a state, that which is excellent in a contrast is obtained.
