Flame retardant prepn. - by reacting a diene (co)polymer with a halomethane in the presence of light, UV or radical initiator

An addn. prod. of a double bond contg. olefinic cpd. and a halomethane is prepd. by reacting a 1,3-dione homo- or copolymer (I) with 0.1-10 mol halomethane CXnY4-n (where X is Br, Y is Cl and n is 1-4). per mol monomer unit in (I) at 0-180 degrees C in the presence of light, UV, and/or a radical initiator with a half life of one hr. at 80-180 degrees C and opt. a solvent. The addn. prod. contains halogen and halomethyl gps. and may be used as a flame retardant for elastomers and thermoplastics. The adducts crosslink during moulding using conventional vulcanising agents.
