PURPOSE:To assign the same index to a picture element linked to a noticed picture element to extract strokes, by preferring the discrimination due to the linkage of 4 picture elements around the noticed picture element having a prescribed density level and discriminating while adding the linkage of 8 picture elements if the linkage of 4 picture elements does not exist. CONSTITUTION:A picture read by a scanner 40 is converted to digital information by an A/D converter 41 and is stored temporarily in a memory 42. In the first step, picture element information in the memory 42 are read out into a processor 44 successively in accordance with raster scanning by a counter 43, and the discrimination due to the linkage of 4 picture elements around a noticed picture element having a prescribed density level is preferred to process these picture element information in the processor 44, and processing results are written in the memory 42. If the linkage of 4 picture elements does not exist, the discrimination covering the linkage of 8 picture elements is performed, and results are written in the memory 42. The same index is assigned to the noticed picture elements and picture elements linked to this picture elements, and it is discriminated whether adjacent pictures are included in a linked picture element area or are independent of each other. |
