An alkoxylation catalyst is prepared by reaction of a dicarboxylic acid and an alcohol with formation of an alkaline earth salt of the resulting half ester followed by partial neutralization with sulfuric acid and drying. A alkoxylation catalyst (I) is prepared by: (A) reaction of one mole of a dicarboxylic acid of formula HOOC(CH2)aCOOH (I) with 1.5-8 moles of an alcohol of formula R-(OA)x-OH (II) to form the corresponding half ester (B) formation of an alkaline earth salt of the half ester by addition of water and 0.45-0.55 moles of basic alkaline earth compound per mole of dicarboxylic acid (C) partial neutralization of the salt by addition of 0.25-0.7 moles H2SO4 per mole of basic alkaline earth compound and (D) removal of by-product water at below 100 degrees C. An Independent claim is included for a process for the oxyalkylation of compounds having an active H atom as well as fatty acid alkyl esters, in the presence of the catalyst (I).
