PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an axis of easy magnetization to coincide with the track direction of a magnetic recording medium in a magnetic film of a CoSm alloy with a Cr underlayer by applying tensile stress in a direction perpendicular to the information track of the medium in the same face as the track. SOLUTION: A Cr underlayer 2, a magnetic film 3 of a CoSm alloy, a protective film 4 and a lubricative film 5 are successively formed on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 to obtain a magnetic disk 10 and an axis of easy magnetization is allowed to coincide with the circumferential direction of the disk by applying tensile stress in the radial direction of the disk. When a sample is polished in the radical direction, tensile stress acts in the direction, an axis of easy magnetization is allowed to coincide with the circumferential direction perpendicular to the direction in which the tensile stress acts and squareness ratio Rs in the circumferential direction is increased. |
