PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high-speed MIP (maximum Intensity Projection) processing which requires no particular hardware and causes no image degradation. SOLUTION: A maximum value for 8 nearby pixels of an original image A as a three-dimensional image is preliminarily extracted. When a maximum value search for the maximum intensity projection of the original image A in an optional direction D is made; an interpolation value is computed by linear interpolation from the 8 nearby pixels of the original image A at each search point H, the maximum value of the 8 nearby pixels at the search point extracted is compared with a candidate value before a comparison with a maximum value candidate already obtained is made, and then the interpolation value is subjected to arithmetic processing, and is compared and updated only when the candidate value is possibly updated.
