PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical material which has improved tenacity and durability by forming a polymer obtained by polymerizing of components containing monomers such as methanesulfoethyl methacrylate and the like. SOLUTION: An optical material is a polymer containing 0.1-50 pts.wt. of a monomer represented by formula I. As monomers having an unsaturated double bond to be copolymerized are selected a hydrophobic monomer or a macromonomer for a non-water containing optical material, a hydrophilic monomer or an macromonomer for a water-containing optical material, a crosslinkable monomer for an optical material which is crosslinked and further a polysiloxane macromonomer for an optical material for which toughness is required. The monomer represented by formula I includes a methanesulfomethyl acrylate, a methanesulfomethyl fumarate, a methanesulfoethyl itaconate and the like (A is H2 C=CH-, a group represented by formula II or the like; R<1> is a 1-5C alkylene group; and R<2> is a 1-5C alkyl group, a group represented by formula III or the like). |
