A method of operating an engine (10) is provided. The engine includes a housing (12) having a combustion chamber (1), a piston (14) disposed adjacent the combustion chamber, a crankshaft (60) connected to the piston, an intake valve (80) associated with the combustion chamber, and an exhaust valve (92) associated with the combustion chamber. The method also includes opening the intake valve after a power stroke (126) of the piston begins and closing the intake valve before the exhaust stroke (128) ends. Furthermore, the method includes causing the exhaust valve to be open for part of an intake stroke (154) of the piston and closing the exhaust valve at least about 30 degrees of crankshaft rotation after the intake stroke begins.
