A method for controlling power of a navigation system is provided to save power of the navigation system by operating a saving mode based on the speed of a vehicle on which the navigation system is mounted. A method for controlling power of a navigation system comprises the step of measuring the speed of a vehicle in which the navigation system is mounted(S203). It is determined if the vehicle stops operating based on the measured speed(S205). If the vehicle is stopped, duration for which the vehicle is stopped is measured(S207). If the duration exceeds a preset duration, the navigation system is driven in a power-saving mode(S209,S211). After the power saving mode has been driven, operating time for which the power saving mode is performed is measured(S213). If the operating time exceeds a preset standard time, the navigation system is terminated(S215).
