The method involves positioning a patient (7) in a receiving opening (8) of a computer tomography scanner (1). A recording scan of a patient region is executed by the scanner. A layer image and/or a volume image and/or a lateral topogram of the patient region is reconstructed from recording data of recording scan, and is represented in a monitor (14). A diameter of the receiving opening is determined, and a boundary (9) of the opening is superimposed with the representation of the layer image and/or the volume image and/or the lateral topogram of the patient region. An independent claim is also included for a computer tomography scanner.
