The allergenicity of an allergenic material is reduced by treating the allergenic material with a haloformate having the formula RO.CO.X wherein X is a halogen and R is alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, arylcarbonyl or a heterocyclic group, at a pH of from 1 to 7 and recovering the resultant modified allergenic material. The haloformate is preferably a chloroformate especially methyl, ethyl or benzoyl chloroformate. The temperature employed for the treatment is preferably about 20‹C. The allergenic material treated may be a protein or glycoprotein extract of the whole allergen. The allergenic material may be, or may be derived from, pollen. Pharmaceutical preparations for parenteral administration comprise the modified allergenic material and a parenterally acceptable carrier. |
