Prostaglandins e3 and f3 alpha prepn - from a tricyclic lactone

Title cpds. are prepd. from cpds. (i):- by (a) blocking free OH by alkyl SO2-; (b) hydrolysing with water; (c) sepg. (S) and (R) forms; (d) forming the bis THP-ethers, (e) reducing lactone-OXO to -OH. (f) Witting alkylation with Hal(CH2)4COOH; (g) oxidn. of 9-OH to 9-OXO (h) liberation of etherified OH, provided that -C triple bond C- may be reduced to -CH=CH(cis) before or after any stage (a)-(h).
