PURPOSE:To produce the titled substance by contacting a mixture of cresol isomers with 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-cyclohexane in an organic solvent and decomposing a clathrate complex of m-cresol and the above cyclohexane. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of cresol isomers is brought into contact with 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-cyclohexane of formula at 10-50 deg.C for 1-20hr to crystallize a clathrate complex of m-cresol and the above cyclohexane. The crystallized complex is separated e.g. by filtration and decomposed e.g. by heating under reduced pressure to obtain m-cresol. The above contacting process is carried out in an organic solvent such as petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, etc. The above operation may be applied to a cresol mixture containing components other than cresol.
