The invention relates to a process and device for measuring the diameter of a tree trunk 1, especially when the latter is being worked with a multifunctional machine used for felling trees. In the conventional process, it is difficult to obtain reliable measuring results. In the process and device according to the invention, the tree trunk 1 is placed at the cutting end 2 of a multifunctional machine, and the diameter is measured on the basis of the position of the measuring organ 3 that controls the trunk, and on the basis of the position of at least one lopping pair 4,5. The measured values can be corrected basically by comparing the measurements obtained by the different devices if the difference between the values exceeds a set limit fed into the system in advance. <IMAGE>
