Apparatus for mounting and removing a pneumatic tyre from a vehicle wheel rim includes latching means 27, 28 for securing one flange thereof to a platform 15, a shoe 60 movable by a piston and cylinder device 58, 59 for applying a local force to a tyre tread, two telescopic arms 48, 47 each rotatable through 180 degrees and each having at their free end a bead deflector guide shoe 49 adapted to fit around a wheel flange, and a vertical hydraulic telescoping jack 70. The cylinder 58 is mounted on a horizontal swivel 57 which is vertically slidable in a channel 54, thus enabling the cylinder 58 and its associated shoe 60 to be positioned in one of two levels so as to apply the local force diagonally upwardly or downwardly. A tyre is fitted on to a wheel rim latched to platform 15 by inserting a portion of one of the tyre beads k in the drop-centre of the rim, applying the local force upwardly to an adjacent tread portion, then rotating the extended shoes 49 from the inserted portion through 180 degrees so as to progressively deflect the bead k over the upper rim flange d, after which the shoes 49 are returned to their initial positions. The local force is then applied downwardly adjacent the bead I and the shoes again rotated to deflect the other bead over the rim flange. To remove a tyre a local force is applied downwardly adjacent the upper bead j and the jack 70 is operated to lift the major portion of the lower bead k off the rim flange. The local force is then removed and re-applied upwardly adjacent a portion of the lower bead k, the jack being then further raised to force the tyre off the rim. |
