The scintillation phosphor elements are produced by forming notches in a carrier, corresponding to lateral boundaries of an element. Then the phosphor in vapour deposited. The carrier is preferably of aluminium, and the notches are formed as slits cut by a saw. The slits may be 0.1mm wide and 0.3mm deep. Prior to vapour deposition the carrier may be coated with a separation facilitating agent. After deposition the phosphor forms needle-shaped crystals. Preferred phosphor material is calcium iodide activated by sodium.
