The method utilises medium or channel linking data processing stations. The stations operate to share access to associated entities across a network and to initiate communications with remote entities by messages directed to logical names assigned to the entities and not to addresses representing specific physical locations. The message don't require intermediate handling within the network for translating names to addresses. At any station a first name direction message is originated and transmitted over a channel or medium to which the station is dircetly coupled.
