1,263,401. Crystal growth. UNITIED AIRCRAFT CORP. 6 Feb., 1970 [13 March, 1969], No. 5777/70. Heading B1S. [Also in Division B3] Double-orientated single crystal castings are directionally solidified in a ceramic-walled mould 10 having article-forming cavities 22 opening via constrictions 26 and ceramic tubes 30 (having 90‹ bends therein) into a solidification controlling cavity 16. The tubes 30 open adjacent and normal to one 13 of at least two chill plates 12, 13 with chill surfaces at angles to one another. In operation, the mould is preheated and alloy poured to fill cavities 16 and 22. Chilling is started resulting in dendritic growth perpendicular to both chill plates. Dendritic growths orientated in two directions growing into the ceramic tubes 30 are selected by the right-angle bend to grow upwardly into the article--forming cavities as upward solidification is effected. The constrictions 26 select single crystals to grow upwards into the article-forming cavities. The arrangement shown in the figures results in the [001] axis of the crystal being orientated along the vertical axis of the article-forming cavity. To obtain other axes of the crystal orientated along the article cavity vertical axis, one of the chill plates and the ceramic tubes are placed at oblique angles to the horizontal. |
