摘要 <p>1434972 Stopping IC engines P SCHMIDLI 25 July 1973 [25 July 1972 6 Oct 1972 19 Jan 1973] 35387/73 Heading F1K [Also in Division H2] In order to reduce atmospheric pollution the control system of an internal combustion engine in a vehicle is provided with means whereby the engine may be stopped when the vehicle is stationary and restarted when required without recourse to the normal starting system of the engine. The control system of an I.C. engine comprises the normal ignition-starting switch 3, ignition coil 4, starter motor 5, and a normally closed switch 7 responsive to a parameter of the engine when running. The system is further provided with a restarting switch 13, which may be associated with the vehicle clutch or accelerator pedal and a series of relays 19, 35, 51, 73, 87 and a time delay switch 63. The engine is normally started by closing the starter switch 3 thereby energizing the starter motor 5, the switch 7 opening to de-energize the starter motor 5 when the engine is running. When the vehicle is stationary depression of a push button 36 closes contacts 37, 39 in relay 35. Coil 25 of relay 19 is then energized from a line 17 connected to a battery 1 by the ignition switch 3 thus moving contact 23 from contact 22 to contact 24 to remove the energization of the ignition coil 4. The engine now stops and the switch 7 closes to complete the circuit of a hold-on coil 41 in relay 35 by way of contacts 81, 82 in relay 73. At the same time an indicating lamp 46 is energized to inform the vehicle driver that the push button may be released. Simultaneously by way of a conductor 48, relay 51 is energized to close contacts 56, 57. When it is required to restart the engine, pedal 11 is moved to close the switch 13 which causes energization of relay 73 by way of the time delay switch 63 and the switch 7. Operation of the contact 80 to contact 83 then de-energizes relay 35 and thereby de-energizing relay 19 which returns to normal thereby reestablishing the circuit to the ignition coil 4. Energization of relay 73 energizes relay 87 so as to energize the starter motor 5 thus restarting the I.C. engine, the switch 7 opening when the engine is running to stop the starter motor 5 and return the relay system to the normal state. The time delay switch 63 is provided to de-energize the system should the engine not be started within a predetermined time. The relay system may be replaced by solid state components and the switch 7 may be made responsive to any desired engine parameter.</p>
